Saturday 16 September 2008 The sanctuary is one of the most ancient Marian Shrines in the United Kingdom, situated just south of the village of Stow, which is some seven miles from
Galashiels. Not only did it suffer destruction in wars between England and Scotland and final closure under the Reformation, the erasure of the remains of the well
Church, the stone believed to bear the footprint of the Blessed Virgin and the well itself (converted to a sheep's trough) continued into the 1960s. But the pilgrimage
was restored by the villagers of Stow, Lauderdale and Ettrick in 2000, in honour of the Incarnation of Christ after two millennia. There is an Assumption-tide pilgrimage and Anglican
eucharist every year on the second Saturday of August. For further details, visit the website of the Stow Pilgrimage. This year the Mass is at 2-30pm, celebrated by Fr Dale Gray. The preacher is Fr David Smith, General Secretary of the Additional Curates' Society. All are welcome.
